Published on Dec 20, 2022 by Dylan Weiher

There are a lot of great outdoor activities available for locals to the National City, CA area. That goes for walking too, with a variety of hiking trails in the region. Offering an excellent opportunity to get up close and personal with nature, there’s something for all skill levels close to town.

5 GREAT HIKING TRAILS AND PATHS NEAR NATIONAL CITY, CA

1. ROCK HOUSE TRAIL

Rock House Trail offers a challenging climb that should take around 2 hours at a moderate pace. Offering beautiful views of a canyon, the Pacific Ocean, downtown San Diego, and Sweetwater Reservoir, it’s well worth the strain of the climb.

The trailhead is located at the northeast corner of Mt. San Miguel Park in Paseo Veracruz, just a 20-minute drive from downtown National City. The trail can be a little exposed at times, with limited shade, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

2. INSPIRATION POINT

This trail is a real hidden gem. Tucked away on the San Diego shoreline, it features a smooth, wide, concrete path, offering great views of Mission Valley. Trees line the path, while sea breezes blow in across the bay, meaning this is a great spot to cool off on those hot California days.

There are plenty of fountains, benches, and picnic spots along the way, so there are plenty of places to rest or enjoy a spot of lunch. Inspiration Point is accessible off Taylor Street, close to Interstate 8. A small parking lot is available onsite, and the path rarely gets too busy.

3. JUNIPER CANYON

Juniper Canyon is a beautiful place for a hike. A short path featuring waterfalls and wildflowers, there’s no better place to get out into nature and forget your worries for a few hours. Not only does it offer panoramic views from a great vantage point and the opportunity to see a variety of interesting wildlife species, but it also has some unique and fascinating features hidden inside it.

On a plateau beside the path lies a rock labyrinth, complete with carefully selected native plants, sculptures, and shrines. It’s a remarkable man-made feature that adds to the beauty and peaceful atmosphere of this truly gorgeous trail.

4. BAYSIDE TRAIL

For an accessible hiking area with plenty of great scenery, look no further than Bayside Trail. Running for just under 3 miles, and offering stunning views of the water, it’s popular with hiking enthusiasts from around the San Diego area. As a result, it can get a little busy on weekends and holidays.

The flat, wide trail is well-maintained, with minimal elevation. It should be suitable for hikers of all abilities, though may not be appropriate for those with mobility issues. Please note, no pets are permitted on the trail. Parking is available at the trailhead.
