1. SWEETWATER SUMMIT REGIONAL PARK

This 500-acre regional park offers 112 campsites at its summit, with peaceful spots to pitch a tent and stunning views of the landscape below. RVs and trailers are welcome too. Campfires may be lit, so you can enjoy that authentic campfire crackle and toast some S’mores, but they should be out by 11pm.

There’s so much to enjoy while you camp here. With 15 miles of walking and biking trails, a reservoir for fishing, a community room, picnic areas, an aquatic play area, and much more, you’ll never get bored camping at Sweetwater Summit Regional Park.

2. CAMPLAND ON THE BAY

Offering great facilities and a super-convenient location, Campland on the Bay is a favorite with local campers who enjoy the finer things in life. With pools and jacuzzies on site, along with a game room, restaurant, and bar (please drink responsibly), this is one of the best-equipped camping locations in the state.

An RV-only site, this coastal campsite is barely a 20-minute drive from National City. It’s also got great access to local beaches and is perfect for water sports enthusiasts.

3. SAN DIEGO METRO KOA

This location of Kampgrounds of America offers spaces for tents and RVs, along with comfortable rental cabins. Offering great value and convenience, it’s another solid choice for camping in the area.

Perfect for families, there are plenty of fun activities here. With a climbing wall, game room, playground, sporting facilities, and more, there’s bound to be something to keep you entertained.

4. KUMEYAAY LAKE

Contained within Mission Trails Regional Park, Kumeyaay Lake offers 46 campsites, available for Friday and Saturday night camping only.

This fairly basic site is scenic and quiet, perfect for those looking to enjoy a more traditional camping experience. It’s a great site for bird spotting, with great blue herons, California quails, and great horned owls among the birds regularly seen in the area.,

5. SOUTH CARLSBAD STATE BEACH

What could be better than camping close to the beach, hearing the sea lapping gently at the shore, and tasting the salt air as you huddle around the fire?

South Carlsbad State Beach offers you the chance to do that. With 223 campsites offering spaces for RVs, trailers, and tents, it’s suitable for all kinds of campers. There are great facilities on-site, including hook-ups, showers, and a camp store.
